I remember the first time he (My dad) ever got frustrated with me was when we’re doing the reading comprehension. I would be like, a robot... reading very slow. he would yell at me, and smack me. He would just start insulting me because I didn’t understand.

They came with rifles and very big guns, and that’s when they started telling everybody to not move, to take off their clothes, to take off their jewelries, and give them their money, and all their belongings. And my mom told me to stay put, to not move.

Etsio worked at Make the Road New York over the summer to save up to return to karate after a several year hiatus following his father’s departure. Aside from paying for karate, Etsio’s savings allow him a budget of $30 a week for food.

My mom was pretty depressed.

Me and my siblings felt like we had to help my mom out; get ready for school, and make our food.
 
 It takes Etsio over 2 hours to get back to the shelter from Staten Island. On days when he has karate, Etsio gets home after midnight.

My dad told me I would be nothing without him.

Honestly, Everything I do is to prove to my dad that I don’t need him.
